The Small StuffMany homeowners take on the task of doing there own painting at home. Some even take on the entire renovation process. Although some many have the experience needed to do a great job many need some tips on how to get there. As a painting contractor I have seen many hack jobs; some by homeowners and some by other contractors. The worst is usually when a person tackles a new development such as a basement. Since all the surfaces are new the painting should be near flawless. Here are a few tips to help you get to that stage. Preparing the TrimIf you have new trim such as baseboards and window and door casings it is highly advisable to caulk all the joints. Most importantly is where the trim meets the wall. Since no room is perfectly square, no wall is perfectly straight. When trim is installed there is usually a small gap. Caulking this can create the illusion of a straight line. It is also important to fill all your nail holes. First you must sand the hole down as there will often be a crater from the nail. Then you must fill it with some form of filler. When filling nail holes if the holes are larger than a pin hole you may need to apply a second coat of filler after they are sanded. Painting the TrimIf you can get the trim on before the floors are set it is highly advisable to spray the trim. Not only will it be faster, but it will create a smoother finish. Although many new homes have lacquer on their trim, latex is also acceptable. One way to create a smoother latex finish is to add an extender to the paint. This will extend the drying time and allow for more of the texture to smooth out. Also, if possible, one should use a High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) sprayer. These are designed specifically for fine finishes. Though this isn’t necessary, it is better for beginners who are less skilled with paint sprayers. As you can see, the right knowledge will create an exceptional job. If you are interested in learning more, call us at 403.999.2995 for a free consultation.
